Purge postponed until autumn!
Purge postponed until autumn! – We’ve won an important battle: the purge law has been taken off the agenda, and Parliament will not discuss this outrageously dark, authoritarian proposal until at least autumn.
Once again, it has been proven: even against an authoritarian regime, it’s possible to fight back and win. In recent weeks, news of the purge law reached millions, with three-quarters of the population opposing the proposal, and it wasn’t even popular among government supporters. Nearly every day saw a protest, a creative action, or a brave stand, mobilizing tens of thousands of people, with demonstrations in cities that hadn’t seen one in living memory. Not only civil society and the press, but also judges, lawyers, the advertising industry, trade unions, and even the banking sector condemned the proposal. Solidarity poured in from across Europe, and the European Commission called on the Hungarian government to withdraw the bill.
Of course, we’ll only be truly at ease when this law ends up where it belongs: in the trash. In the meantime, we keep going, because for the past 15 years, an authoritarian regime has been trying to strip away your freedom, your dignity, your rights, step by step. Don’t think they’ve given up now. We continue the fight so that one day we may all live in a free, just, and compassionate country. As we always have, we’ll stand by you, because:
We’re here for you. We’re with you. We’re staying because of you.
