Anti-civil liberties laws are being struck down at the Court of Justice of the European Union

After the anti-civil registration law, the Court of Justice of the European Union has ruled that a law threatening to imprison civilians who help refugees is also contrary to EU law. In recent years, a series of stigmatising and restrictive laws have been passed to make the work of CSOs impossible. However, since the rulings of the Court of Justice of the European Union, it is clear that the will to help cannot be restricted by legislation.

Today's ruling states that criminalising the assistance of refugees is contrary to an EU rule that requires refugees to be able to contact CSOs for information or legal advice. Unjustified restrictions on the right to asylum - automatic refusal of refugees arriving via Serbia - also violate EU law.

The CSOs that make up the Civilisation Coalition believe in a world of solidarity, justice and sustainability, where people are free to take action on issues that matter to them, without fear or restriction. The decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union is therefore an important step, which also shows why the Hungarian government of the day should see civil society and active citizens as partners.
